Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though chequered by failure, than to take rank with those poor souls who neither enjoy much nor suffer much, because they live in the grey twilight that knows neither victory nor defeat.

Anytime I am feeling I need some motivation, I play this!

As a triathlete and endurance sport nut/coach I realize that each and everyday we immerse ourselves in a sport that from the outside it seems selfish. What other people that are non-triathletes and endurance sports nuts think is that we do perform our activities in a selfish manner but it is also a part of our life. It is the same thing as someone going out with their friends to get a drink, going to the spa for a long weekend, social functions, etc. It makes us feel good about ourselves and in turn we are more pleasant to be around.
Take a type-A endurance athlete and have him/her miss a workout. It is not a pretty sight.
We all have our personal reasons why we do what we do. It may be that we love our self-image from training, love the solitude of long rides and runs, the feel of the water gliding past you, the looks you get and the talk you generate when someone finds out that you compete in Ironman’s and you are up working our before work and again when everyone is sleeping.
Trust me, I get it! But when I look through all the forums, at least once a week someone is posting a message about how the significant other can’t stand the training hours or he/she does not understand.
Here is the deal, take you significant other aside and explain to them what it means to you and how you feel when you train and race. Take off once in a while and take the family out to dinner. If it was not for your family, we would not have molded in to the people we are today. Take a break from training one day it will not kill you.
WE NEED TO STEP BACK AND SAY “THANK YOU FOR ALL YOUR SUPPORT!” “I APPRECIATE ALL YOUR SACRIFICES!” “I LOVE YOU MORE THAN MY BIKE!”
